Firearm Training:

Knowledge of the Firearm Control Act 60 of 2000 – unit standard 117705:

Every firearm owner living in South Africa is required by law to complete the  Legal Test Unit Standard 117705 Knowledge of 
the Firearm Control Act 60 of 2000 in order to renew their firearm license. The assessment consists of a 55 question open 
book test, which can be done at home in your own time followed by a 25 closed book test which is to be done at our premises.
On successful completion of both tests we will issue you with our certificate and the necessary paperwork for the SAPS. 
During peak times we conduct renewal workshops. This is a comprehensive three hour workshop where we cover all your 
requirements to renew your firearm license under the FCA Act 60 of 2000. Please bring a certified copy of your ID, a pen to 
write with and your thinking cap!!! Practical assessments are optional.

The following renewal periods, according to birthdates are applicable to a person who wishes to renew his or her license:

1 Jan to 31 March 1 Jan 2005 to 31 Mar 2006
1 April to 30 June 1 Jan 2006 to 31 Mar 2007

1 Oct to 31 Dec 1 Jan 2008 to 31 Mar 2009

Handle and use a Handgun - 119649:

This course covers legal aspects relating to when you may and may not shoot in self defense situations, firearm safety,
loading and unloading and the fundamentals of shooting. On this course you will shoot approximately 50 rounds of 
ammunition. The entry level to this course is Unit Standard 117705 - Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act 60/2000. This 
course is a legal requirement for first time firearm owners. Course duration is one day.

Handle and use a manually operated Rifle or Carbine – 119651:

This course covers legal aspects relating to when you may and may not shoot in self defense situations, firearm safety, 
loading and unloading and the fundamentals of shooting. On this course you will shoot approximately 25 rounds of 
ammunition. The entry level to this course is Unit Standard 117705 Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act 60/2000. This
course is a legal requirement for first time firearm owners. Course duration is one day.


Handle and use a Self-Loading Rifle or Carbine – 119650:

This course covers legal aspects relating to when you may and may not shoot in self defense situations, firearm safety, 
loading and unloading and the fundamentals of shooting. On this course you will shoot approximately 25 rounds of 
ammunition. The entry level to this course is Unit Standard 117705 Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act 60/2000. This 
course is a legal requirement for first time firearm owners. Course duration is one day.

Handle and use a Shotgun – 119652:

This course covers legal aspects relating to when you may and may not shoot in self defense situations, firearm safety,
loading and unloading and the fundamentals of shooting. On this course you will shoot approximately 25 rounds of 
ammunition. The entry level to this course is Unit Standard 117705 Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act 60/2000. This 
course is a legal requirement for first time firearm owners. Course duration is one day.

Handle and use a handgun for business purposes – 123515:

Entry level to this course: Handle and use a Handgun – 119649. This course teaches a higher level of proficiency than the 
basic course and is a requirement for Security Personnel and members of official institutions. This course focuses on a high 
standard of shooting and includes holster-work, dealing with malfunctions and shooting against time limits. On this course
you will shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition. Course duration is two days.

Handle and use a manually operated rifle or carbine for business purposes – 123519:

Entry level to this course: Handle and use a manually operated Rifle or Carbine – 119651. This course teaches a higher level 
of proficiency than the basic course and is a requirement for Security Personnel and members of official institutions. This
course focuses on a high standard of shooting and includes holster-work, dealing with malfunctions and shooting against 
time limits. On this course you will shoot approximately 30 to 50 rounds of ammunition. Course duration is two days.

Handle and use a self-loading rifle or carbine for business purposes – 123511:

Entry level to this course: Handle and use a Self-Loading Rifle or Carbine – 119650. This course teaches a higher level of 
proficiency than the basic course and is a requirement for Security Personnel and members of official institutions. This course 
focuses on a higher standard of shooting and includes holster-work, dealing with malfunctions and shooting against time 
limits. On this course you will shoot approximately 30 to 50 rounds of ammunition. Course duration is two days.

Handle and use a shotgun for business purposes – 123514:

Entry level to this course: Handle and use a Shotgun – 119652. This course teaches a higher level of proficiency than the basic
course and is a requirement for Security Personnel and members of official institutions. This course focuses on a high 
standard of shooting and includes holster-work, dealing with malfunctions and shooting against time limits. On this course 
you will shoot approximately 30 to 50 rounds of ammunition. Course duration is two days.

Apply Tactical knowledge:
This course is not for beginners!

This course focuses on generic tactics that are applicable to handguns, shotguns and rifles. On this course you will learn 
about shooting while moving, working as a member of a tactical team, dynamic room entry and the correct procedure for 
clearing difficult areas such as stairwells. 

Tactical Handgun:
This course is not for beginners!

Entry level to this course: Handle and use a handgun for business purposes – 123515 and Apply tactical knowledge in the use
of firearms. This course focuses on the use of firearms in high risk situations and under extreme stress. One needs to be in 
reasonably good physical condition to enroll on this course. This course will teach you how to win a gun fight. You will require 
400 rounds of ammunition for this course.

Tactical Self loading Rifle /Carbine:
This course is not for beginners!

Entry level to this course: Handle and use a self-loading rifle or carbine for business purposes – 123511 and Apply tactical 
knowledge in the use of firearms. This course focuses on the use of firearms in high risk situations and under extreme stress. One needs to be in reasonably good physical condition to enroll on this course. This course will teach you how to win
a gun fight. You will require 400 rounds of ammunition for the course.

Tactical Shotgun:
This course is not for beginners!

Entry level to this course: Handle and use a shotgun for business purposes – 123514 and Apply tactical knowledge in the use 
of firearms. This course focuses on the use of firearms in high risk situations and under extreme stress. One needs to be in 
reasonably good physical condition to enroll on this course. This course will teach you how to win a gun fight. You require 200 
rounds of ammunition for this course. 

Range Officer:

This course is aligned with Unit Standard 123516 - Supervise shooting exercises.
On this course you will learn about the SABS compulsory standards for shooting ranges. You will also learn how to safely 
control shooters on the firing line during live fire exercises, using proper range commands and safety standards.

Tactical Range Officer:

This course is aligned with Unit Standard 123517 - Supervise the operation of a shooting range and tactical shooting 
exercises.


To qualify for this course you are required to first complete the tactical Unit Standards. On this course you will learn how to
safely control tactical shooting exercises and how to design different types of tactical shooting exercises.
